Why was the word “black” emptied of its historical brilliance? To denigrate means literally: to tear away the light from a being to render them dull. It is precisely this linguistic, biological, and spiritual enterprise that Africa and its diaspora have suffered for centuries: a methodical erasure of their original splendor.
